Otoplasty, or surgery of the ear, is performed to reposition prominent or “protruding” ears to a more natural position and closer to the head, or to reduce the size of large ears in order to achieve proper symmetry with the face. Patients can therefore improve their image and self-confidence. It is generally performed under local anaesthesia and sedation, so the patient can go home the same day. Incisions are usually made behind the ear, leaving scars that are almost invisible.
